Innovative strategies to detect and treat cancer are recognised in global healthcare challenge
Innovative technology and design consultancy Cambridge Design Partnership has been selected as a semi-finalist of the LIVESTRONG Foundation’s inaugural Big C competition, a global innovation challenge which aims to uncover solutions that change the way the world fights cancer.
The LIVESTRONG Foundation fights to improve the lives of people affected by cancer all around the world. Created in 1997, it is known for providing free cancer support services and advocating policies that improve access to care and quality of life.
Cambridge Design Partnership submitted two innovative cancer detection and treatment ideas. The first focuses on creating novel optical systems to enable faster and more reliable detection of cancer in biopsy samples.
The second focuses on pain management by improving the design of the syringe drivers used to administer painkillers to cancer patients, improving patient confidence and reducing the risk of user errors.
Our team was inspired by the Big C competition because it specifically focuses on innovation to meet the diverse needs of cancer patients, rather than just exploring the opportunities provided by emerging technologies,” explained Mike Cane, founder, Cambridge Design Partnership, “as this approach resonates with our patient-centred technology innovation process".
Speaking about the competition, mechanical engineer Aki Laakso, who is leading on the LIVESTRONG project, said: “Competitions like the Big C are crucial to furthering innovation. The competition is unique in its focus on the experiences of cancer patients and survivors, and the feedback from the LIVESTRONG network of survivors will be key to guiding the direction of our development programme. Winning the Big C prize would allow us to further explore how our ideas can benefit patients with cancer".
Cambridge Design Partnership develops innovative healthcare solutions, including products like the SIAScope diagnostic imaging system which allows doctors to reliably diagnose melanoma skin cancer without resorting to a biopsy, and the Sanarus Visica minimally invasive cryoablation system that is undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of breast cancer.
