This year celebrates the Centenary of Pyrex®, the innovative resilient glass cookware found in kitchens around the globe. To celebrate this event, International Cookware – exclusive licensee of the Pyrex® consumer cookware brand in the EMEA territory – appointed innovative technology and design consultancy Cambridge Design Partnership to develop a new generation of Pyrex premium ovenware.

The design of the new “Optimum” range, launched at this year’s Ambiente, Europe’s biggest consumer goods trade fair, was led by insights gained during consumer research. Cambridge Design Partnership’s Front End Research and Industrial Design teams carried out detailed interviews and observations with everyday kitchenware and Pyrex® users. This research helped to create an opportunity specification based on the real-life uses, needs, expectations and challenges of every day cooking and serving through immersive in-home observation.

The research  uncovered common difficulties surrounding the grip and handling of hot kitchenware, inconvenience of shallow dishes, and cleaning. A further insight centred on a reluctance to take the Pyrex® from oven to table. Cambridge Design Partnership took these findings into consideration when they began work on the new Optimum range. This process included the incorporation of new features, such as longer, ergonomically curved handles with ribbed grip details underneath so that the upper surfaces remained easy to clean, and notably deeper dish sides. Elegant aesthetic arcs flow from the handle into the dish walls to balance modern dynamic aesthetic with careful consideration of mould design, mass-production techniques, and commercial needs.

Following the production of a prototype, further independent consumer research* received a 97% approval rating from consumers, who felt that the contemporary design, shape and depth of the new range made it superior to alternative designs.

We had to walk a fine line between respecting the premium values that built the 100-year-old identity, with bringing the brand’s core range into the 21st century for both existing loyal users, and a new generation of cooks.

The 100th anniversary is one of those rare opportunities to praise one of the heroes of the home. It can be all too easy to forget the ingenuity and effort that has to go into something as day-to-day as a piece of kitchenware, and yet there are very few technologies in the world today whose pioneering processes remain completely relevant to our daily lives, and are still celebrated 100 years on”.

The borosilicate glass offers excellent thermal shock resistance and The Optimum range is able to withstand temperatures as low as -40°C and as high as +300°C, it is also able to endure temperature variations of up to 230°C. This allows you to batch cook food in advance, freeze and reheat food confidently, so you can eat the meals you love, even if time is short. The Optimum range is dishwasher safe and stain resistant, and will retain its characteristic shine for years to come.
